Kiai Tholhah: Pesantren and NU insperable from each other
NU Online · Sabtu, 22 Juli 2017 | 16:40 WIB
As the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia and perhaps the world, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) was founded in 1926 in Surabaya is inseparable from the roles played by Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) ulema.
Member of the Advisory Board of Nahdlatul Ulama KH Tholhah Hasan, popularly known as Kiai Tholhah, made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting with NU Online in Malang recently.
Kiai tholhah even reminded of the importance of understanding that pesantren is NU and NU is pesantren and both could no longer be separated from ano another.
"Ït is often said that NU is the pesantren writ large. The pesantren is NU writ small," he said, adding that this slogan indicated the close relationship between the Nahdliyin based organization and its roots in pesantren.
The former Minister of Religious Affairs during the KH Abdurrahman Wahid's administration also said that the relationship between NU and pesantren is not exclusive.
"That means not all pesantren or clerics (kyai), belong to NU," he said that there had been some involved in organizations other than NU. (Masdar)
