Nine Political Guidelines for NU Followers

The following are nine political guidelines for NU followers produced at the NU's 18th Congress in Krapyak, Yogyakarta in 1989:

1. For NU politics is the involvement of citizens in the nation and state life comprehensively in accordance with Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution;

For NU Politics must have national orientations and leads to the nation's integrity along with various steps that always appreciate the national unity to achieve common goals, namely the realization of a just, prosperous community physically and mentally and is conducted as such a good deed towards happiness in the world and life in the hereafter.

3. For NU Politics is evolving true and democratic values of independence, educating the nation's maturity to be aware of the importance of rights, obligations and responsibilities to pursue common goodness.

4. For NU politics should be conducted through such values as moral, ethic and culture that believe in one and only one God, call for a just and civilized humanity, call for the unity of Indonesia, call for democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives and call for social justice for the whole of the people of Indonesia;

5. For NU politics must be conducted with inner honesty and religious morality, constitutionally and fairly in accordance with shared rules and norms and able to develop deliberation mechanism in solving common problems;

6. For NU politics is conducted to strengthen national consensus and should be in accordance with morality as the implementation of the teaching of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah;

7. For NU politics, for whatever reason, can not be conducted by ignoring common interest and dividing the unity;

8. Dissenting opinion among NU followers' political aspirations should stay in control within brotherly relationships, modesty (tawadlu'), and respect one another so that in politics there would always be a unity within NU community;

9. For NU politics is aimed at calling for a mutual social communication to build the nation in creating a climate that expectedly gives such possibilities to develop social organizations that are more independent and capable of accomplishing their function as a social means to gather together and unify aspirations and participate in development.
